Lesson # 1 - Using the WeKWL App
Overview
This lesson introduces students to explore what they know (using their background knowledge) about trains. The video they watch on their iPads shows trains from around the world. This is the hook to draw students into a discussion and to start the vocabulary process
Activity
Student watch a short video on their iPads called ultimate trains. The link to this youtube clip will uploaded to the iPads prior to the class. After watching the clip, students then will be asked to access their K-W-L chart on their iPads using the WeKWL app. Students can join the session that I created so that they will be exposed in "real-time" to the other students input on what they Know (K) and what they Want (W) to learn. Students can then save the session on their individual iPads.
After students have completed the task they can connect with another student and discuss some of the ideas and words found in the K-W-L chart. This leaves room for me to walk around with my iPad and visit with different paired students to discuss some of the vocabulary.
Upon completion of the discussion students will then access the Word Collage App on their iPad. Using the K-W-L chart they will start to develop their own personal word collage based on the vocabulary we discussed in our small pairs. This is an opportunity to personalize their word wall. We will continually refer to this word wall as vocabulary grows throughout each lesson.
Vocabulary (NEW)
locomotive, engine, steam, exploration, development, identity, railroads, tracks (dual meaning), retrieving, development, contrasting.
