Lesson # 2 - History of Trains in Canada
Overview
In this lesson students watch a brief video about the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and then read an excerpt from "Canada by Train". This is modified text using lextutor and vocabulary words are highlighted. Students will have access to the YouTube video.
Activity
Prior to this activity students access their word walls and their definitions using both Word Collage and We Write. Students review previous vocabulary with another student. Students watch a short video on their iPads called Canadian Pacific Railway. Students will then be asked to open the Evernote app. They will read a modified passage "Before There Were Trains". In this modified passage, vocabulary will be highlighted so they can use these words to add to their word collage. Students will then use the dictionary.com app to find definitions and synonyms to add to their personalized word wall. They will access the WeWrite app where they can add the new words (synonyms) along with definitions and personal sentences that include the words. They will have the option to use WeWrite individually or as a group session that will be set up by the teacher. The teacher can monitor the students activity on WeWrite as students enter their information. The teacher can also ask questions of students or highlight vocabulary.
