Lesson # 3 - Building the Railway
Overview
Students up to this point have explored trains and why the railroad was built to join Canada. They will recycle vocabulary and read piece of text (with images) titled Solving Challenges which they can access using the evernote app. This text is not modified like the previous text but words will be highlighted. Students will work in pairs to read and make notes in WeWrite about the text and at this point they will create a new Word Collage for Challenges in building the railway and add the new vocabulary. Afterwards they will use dictionary.com to find appropriate definitions.
Activity
Students and the teacher discuss the word wall along with meanings from WeWrite. This is an opportunity to fill out the "L" in their K-W-L chart. Discuss the meaning of challenge and ask students to use iPad Safari to find images that represent a challenge. Students can then display and present their images to each other using WeWrite. Students will access their word collage to see if they can reuse some of their new words in their verbal discussions.
